Islam Makhachev ended 2025 by becoming a double champion after defeating Jack Della Maddalena decisively at UFC 322. The performance impressed fans worldwide, increasing excitement about his next fight and expectations surrounding his future welterweight championship reign.

According to the Dagestani champion, he aims to secure the most welterweight title defenses in history and establish a legacy. Makhachev has already mentioned respected names like veteran Kamaru Usman while considering possible opponents for upcoming title defenses.

However, many fans and experts prefer him facing younger rising contenders to test his dominance against fresh competitive challenges in the division. Recently, Makhachev discussed Michael Morales, expressing interest in that matchup and acknowledging the young contender’s growing reputation and momentum.

“Morales was not undefeated a few days ago, but today he’s undefeated again. I don’t know how they removed it. I saw the cage fight—he got choked out, and then they announced it was an exhibition match. Well then, he needs to be choked out again,” said Islam Makhachev via Match TV.

👀 Islam Makhachev named Michael Morales as his next desired opponent as well as Usman, commented on his recent professional record changes:

“Morales was not undefeated a few days ago, but today he’s undefeated again.
Michael Morales impressed fans in his last fight, securing a dominant win against Sean Brady via TKO. The Ecuadorian showcased crisp boxing, improving takedown defense, and calculated aggression, making him a real threat.

Following his win, Morales boldly called out Islam Makhachev, believing his size and striking could challenge the pound-for-pound king’s suffocating dominance. Morales’ sharp striking against Makhachev’s relentless wrestling promises a fascinating chess match, where positioning, balance, and endurance will decide everything.

Nick Diaz breaks down Islam Makhachev’s wrestling dominance

Islam Makhachev has dominated elite fighters with relentless wrestling pressure, flawless transitions, and submission skills that consistently break opponents. His devastating D’arce choke remains a signature weapon, trapping rivals like Dustin Poirier and Renato Moicano.

Makhachev used that pressure against Jack Della Maddalena, closing space and asserting total control throughout the contest. Veteran Nick Diaz recently discussed the fight and explained what JDM should have done not to get dominated.

“You watch this fight with Islam and the f*cking Australian. The poor guy is like I don’t feel sorry for him cause he needs to learn to get up… I’m like, you didn’t learn how to like, you know what I mean, go back and systematically understand why a black belt is putting in passing your guard or cause you can’t tell me I wouldn’t pass your guard. If that was me, I would,” said Nick Diaz via Jake Shields YouTube.

Nick Diaz teaches bottom escapes, pointing out where JDM went wrong against Islam Makhachev.👀

“You watch this fight with Islam and a f**king Australian.”

“These guys who have zero losses, he did not fucking understand that, and I had to watch this fight for five fucking… pic.twitter.com/qlI6N78Jmk
— Red Corner MMA (@RedCorner_MMA) January 19, 2026

Apart from wrestling, Islam Makhachev continues evolving on the feet, confidently trading with elite strikers. Often considered a complete fighter, Makhachev has earned respect from legends like Jon Jones for his consistency. He recently discussed returning after Ramadan, possibly targeting a blockbuster appearance at the White House event.

However, not all his scheduled fights went ahead. His bout against Rinat Fakhretdinov on December 17, 2022, was cancelled because Michael got injured. Another fight with Ramiz Brahimaj on July 30, 2022, was called off after Brahimaj withdrew.

Final Prediction

Michael Morales has better takedown defense than Gilbert Burns. Plus, he’s on a 17-fight winning streak. Because of that, he looks like he has the edge in this fight. On the other hand, Burns is 38 years old and on a three-fight losing streak. It’s a tough, five-round fight.

Morales hasn’t fully proven himself yet, but he has power and better distance control. I don’t see Burns pulling off a sneaky submission either. This fight could go either way, but Gilbert could get knocked out—and I wouldn’t want to see that happen.

Burns almost beat Khamzat Chimaev, which makes me think he still has a chance. But that was three years ago. A lot has changed for Gilbert since then. He suffered a brutal knockout by Jack Della Maddalena, and lost to Belal Muhammad and Sean Brady. This isn’t the same Gilbert who fought Khamzat.

Just over a year ago, Burns was winning two rounds against JDM and seemed to be taking the third. But then JDM scrambled and finished Burns with ground and pound in the final minutes. JDM is now the champ. He lost only by decision to Belal, the previous champ, and Brady, the number one contender. Khamzat is also fighting for the title.

I really want Burns to win and retire on a high note. Morales has a lot of range and speed, which worries me. However, Morales doesn’t fight like Belal or Brady. It will be a tough fight, but Burns can pull it off.

One thing to keep in mind: many undefeated fighters lost their first loss this year.
