Former UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway has openly called out Conor McGregor as a potential opponent for McGregor’s long-awaited return to the UFC. Holloway recently said that he would be willing to fight McGregor at any weight, showing that he is more interested in the fight itself than the division it takes place in.
The matchup is interesting not just because of their names, but because both fighters are huge figures in the featherweight division’s history. Holloway is widely regarded as one of the greatest featherweights ever, while McGregor remains the biggest star the sport has produced. A fight between them today would look very different from when they first met more than a decade ago.

Their first fight and how both careers changed
Holloway and McGregor first fought in August 2013 at UFC Fight Night in Boston. At the time, Holloway was only 21 years old and still very early in his UFC run, while McGregor was just beginning his rise in the promotion. McGregor won the fight via unanimous decision, but the fight had an unusual twist as he tore his ACL during the bout and relied heavily on wrestling to control Holloway.

After that fight, both fighters went on completely different but equally impressive paths. McGregor became UFC featherweight champion by knocking out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds and later became the first double champion in UFC history by winning the lightweight title. Holloway later became the dominant featherweight champion, defending his belt multiple times and setting striking records that still stand today.
Now, years later, a rematch would be very different. Holloway is far more experienced and physically stronger, while McGregor is still one of the most dangerous strikers in MMA. If the UFC decides to book this fight, it would likely be one of the biggest events of the year, especially with Holloway saying they can fight at any weight.
