Tang Kai Finds New Motivation Ahead Of ONE Fight Night 43 Title Defence

Tang Kai has always been composed. The stillness he carries into fights, the precision he applies under pressure, the refusal to be drawn into emotion when the stakes are highest. These qualities defined his rise and they define his championship reign. Since last September, they have a new source.

The ONE Featherweight MMA World Champion became a father in September 2025, and the shift in perspective that followed has added a layer to his motivation that no title or record can replicate. He defends his belt against Shamil “The Cobra” Gasanov in the main event of ONE Fight Night 43: Tang vs. Gasanov on Prime Video on Friday, May 15, live in U.S. primetime from Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

“Since becoming a father, I have greater responsibilities,” Tang said. “I want my kids to have a better life than I had when I was young. I have to work harder, fight harder.”

The demands of fatherhood and a world championship camp arriving simultaneously would test most people’s ability to focus. For Tang, the two have reinforced each other.

His championship run, which includes eight promotional wins, the historic title victory over Thanh Le at ONE 160, and the defining TKO in their rematch at ONE 166, was built on the same disciplined, long-term thinking that now shapes how he approaches family. Nothing about that has changed. The stakes have simply grown.

“The change is just becoming more mature and having more responsibility. I’m always thinking about family,” he said. “It gives me more motivation.”

That maturity has never come at the expense of the fighter. Tang became the first male Chinese MMA World Champion in history in 2022, and the reception he received on returning home to Hunan after that victory told him exactly what the achievement meant beyond his own career. Thousands of supporters turned out. The national flag he carries into the ring is not a prop. It is a weight he has chosen to carry deliberately, and one he intends to carry again on Friday.

“It’s a great honor and pride for me to wear the Chinese national flag, and it also gives me even more motivation,” Tang said. “If I win the fight and get to carry the national flag again, it will fill me with even greater pride.”

What he wants to leave behind for the fighters who follow him is as clear to Tang as the game plan for Gasanov. A generation of Chinese martial artists is watching how he handles the hardest fights and the heaviest pressure, and he understands that every defence adds to or subtracts from that example.

“No matter what, I’m still me. Still working hard to fight my best every time. To bring the fans more exciting fights. That’s what I’m supposed to do,” he said. “I want to be a role model for the younger generation of Chinese fighters. I will give my all in every fight and strive to defend my title many more times.”
