Idris Elba Says James Bond Should Not Be Made ‘Woke’ Amid Ongoing 007 Casting Speculation

Idris Elba has shared his thoughts on the future of the James Bond franchise, arguing that the iconic spy should not be changed in an attempt to satisfy modern social trends.

Speaking to GQ, the Luther star addressed the long-running rumors that once linked him to the role of 007. While Elba said he was flattered by the speculation, he maintained that he was never seriously in the running to replace Daniel Craig as Bond.

The actor also acknowledged that some international audiences may not embrace a major departure from the character’s traditional portrayal.

“Bond is big all over the world,” Elba said. “And audiences won’t all go for a black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”

Elba Urges Bond Franchise To Stay True To Its Roots

Elba emphasized that James Bond has always been a form of escapist entertainment and should remain focused on that identity rather than trying to reflect every cultural debate.

“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” he said. “I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try to answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”

The comments arrive at a crucial moment for the franchise as producers continue their search for the next actor to portray the legendary British spy.

Search For The Next 007 Continues

The hunt for a new James Bond officially began last month following years of speculation. Daniel Craig’s tenure as 007 came to an end with No Time to Die, leaving one of the most sought-after roles in Hollywood vacant.

The next Bond film is already taking shape behind the scenes. Denis Villeneuve, known for directing the Dune films, has been confirmed as the project’s director, while Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight will pen the screenplay.

Several actors have been linked to the role in recent months, including Callum Turner, Henry Cavill and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. However, no official casting announcement has been made.

Despite being one of the most frequently mentioned names whenever Bond discussions emerge, Elba has consistently distanced himself from the speculation. His latest remarks suggest that while he appreciates the support from fans, he believes the franchise’s success lies in preserving the essence of the character that audiences around the world have embraced for generations.

With auditions reportedly underway, the wait for the next James Bond may finally be approaching its conclusion.
