Eduard Folayang Returns At The Inner Circle 21 Using Every Fight As A Test Of What Remains

Eduard Folayang has been in this sport long enough to know what the questions around him really mean. They are not insults. They are legitimate, and he is using them as fuel.

The former three-time ONE Lightweight MMA World Champion faces Japanese contender Shozo “Great Teacher” Isojima in a lightweight MMA bout at The Inner Circle 21, streaming live for members in Asia primetime from Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, July 10. At 42 years old with a 1-4 record across his last five outings, Folayang has framed this fight as more than a contest. It is a verdict.

“I see all this as a big challenge. Of course, some people are pointing out my age. But for me, I look at this fight as a good test to decide which direction I’m going to go,” he said.

“If I’m leaving fighting, or if I can still pull something out of the potential that remains in me.”

He is not disguising what is at stake. A poor performance would tell him something clearly. A competitive one would keep the door open.

“To be honest, this fight could be my transition match. If my performance is not good, I think that’s already a sign for me to transition to another stage. But if I perform and still feel I’m there, I think that’s also a good sign for me to not leave yet,” he said.

Whatever the outcome on July 10, Folayang’s legacy inside the promotion is already settled. The man who headlined ONE Championship’s inaugural event in 2011, who captured the lightweight title by stopping Shinya Aoki in 2016, and who spent more than a decade as the standard-bearer of Filipino MMA has long since secured his place. His focus now has shifted to what that legacy builds.

“If anything, I just want to see more Filipinos who are talented in this sport get their opportunities. I want to be an inspiration for them to chase the same dreams,” he said.

“I want the sport to continue and be able to inspire others to become better fighters and unleash their greatness.”

After leaving Team Lakay in 2023, Folayang founded Lions Nation MMA in his home city of Baguio, building a training centre for the next generation from the ground up. The gym has become the heart of his daily purpose.

Folayang is deliberate about when and how he will step away from competition. He is not driven by a calendar. He is driven by a feeling.

“The thing is, when I retire, I want it because I feel fulfilled already. There are a lot of fighters who we see retire at the peak of their careers, then eventually they fight again. I want to avoid that dilemma,” he said.
