Makhachev won the belt by beating former champion Jack Della Maddalena last year in November via unanimous decision. It was a brutal representation of Makhachev’s wrestling prowess, and in a recent interview, Garry talked about this threat in detail.

He is a phenomenal wrestler and grappler, and if you allow him to stay on top and utilize his grappling and his wrestling, he can suffocate you,” Ian Garry via High Performance

Garry is well known for his all-round capabilities, including striking and wrestling, and has experience of fighting long rounds consistently. In order to prepare for Makhachev, Garry previously trained with his Georgian friends, including Ilia Topuria, ahead of the fight.

Garry is currently on a two-fight win streak and would like to use that momentum to win the belt. On the other hand, Makhachev will look to continue his dominance and beat Anderson Silva‘s record of 16 consecutive wins.

Ian Garry talks about his comparisons with Conor McGregor

Ian Garry is from Ireland and is often compared to former UFC double champion Conor McGregor throughout his professional MMA career. Similar to McGregor, Garry used his trash-talking and fighting skills to gain popularity and is now one step closer to becoming a champion.

Garry has always been vocal about the influence he received from McGregor during his career and recently shared the pressure that comes with it. “I’ve had a lot of pressure from the outside world, from the fans and the sport itself, to be the star and hype that Conor McGregor set. I’ve had a lot of comparisons to Conor due to the fact that we’re both from Ireland,” Ian Garry continues.

Garry explained how McGregor fought Jose Aldo, who was the pound-for-pound best fighter at that time and undefeated before their championship clash. Similarly, Garry is now scheduled to fight the current UFC pound-for-pound king and hopes to achieve a similar result next month. With McGregor’s recent loss against Max Holloway, Garry has the opportunity to bring success back for the Irish fans.
