Elbek Alyshov Embraces His Underdog Role Ahead Of ONE World Title Shot
Not every challenger needs to boast about beating the odds. Sometimes quiet acceptance of the moment says more than bravado ever could.
Elbek Alyshov challenges ONE Bantamweight MMA World Champion Enkh-Orgil Baatarkhuu for the title at The Inner Circle 24 on Friday, July 31. The card streams live for members from Bangkok’s historic Lumpinee Stadium.
The undefeated Azerbaijani-Russian arrives with a flawless 10-0 record built on dominant submission wins over Jeremy Pacatiw and Carlo Bumina-ang. Representing GM Gym, the 27-year-old has climbed the rankings with a suffocating grappling style that has left little room for opponents to breathe.
Still, he knows the experience gap between himself and a five-round war veteran like Baatarkhuu is real.
“I think my position as the underdog is deserved because Enkh has experience in five-round fights. He has spent a great deal of time competing and has fought the best. I do not have that kind of experience yet,” Alyshov said.
“But it does not scare me at all because I know that only real challenges push us forward, and only by overcoming real challenges can we reach a new level.”
Alyshov’s respect for the champion runs deep. To him, Baatarkhuu represents the blueprint of what relentless ambition and an unbreakable will can build inside the Circle.
“He is very strong and very big for the division, and he has a solid chin. He throws very unorthodox strikes and uses a wide variety of attacks,” Alyshov said.
“He looks for the finish until the very last second. He always takes the center. There has never been a fight in which he backed up. It has never happened.”
That admiration has not softened his resolve. Alyshov views Friday’s collision as something far bigger than a typical title fight.
“It feels like something from an ancient Greek war. Our clash will be very interesting, like a battle between two strong men,” Alyshov said.
“On July 31, the fans will see Elbek go all the way for victory. He will stand his ground, and the people will see a warrior — a warrior who came here to win.”
