Who was Prichard Colon?
Born on September 19, 1992, in Maitland, Florida, Colon represented Puerto Rico throughout his boxing career. Nicknamed “Digget,” he was a five-time Puerto Rican national champion and won gold at the 2010 Pan American Youth Championships before turning professional in 2013.
He quickly established himself as one of boxing’s most exciting young talents, winning 16 straight fights with 13 knockouts and earning a reputation for his aggressive style and technical ability.

The fight that changed everything
On October 17, 2015, Colon faced fellow unbeaten boxer Terrel Williams at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia. What should have been another step toward title contention instead became one of boxing’s most tragic nights.
Throughout the fight, Williams landed multiple illegal rabbit punches to the back of Colon’s head. The referee deducted only one point from Williams despite Colon repeatedly complaining about the blows. Between rounds, Colon also told the ringside doctor he felt dizzy, but he was cleared to continue.
The fight ended in unusual fashion after the ninth round when Colon’s corner mistakenly removed his gloves, believing the contest had finished, resulting in a disqualification loss.

He collapsed in the dressing room after vomiting and was rushed to hospital, where doctors discovered a severe subdural hematoma — a life-threatening bleed on the brain. Emergency surgery was performed to relieve pressure, but the damage was devastating.
Colon spent 221 days in a coma and was left with permanent neurological injuries that robbed him of his boxing career and his independence.

Although Colon eventually regained consciousness, he required around-the-clock care for the rest of his life.
