BKFC 94: Darren Till Edges Out Yoel Romero In Narrow Main Event, Manchester Fights Thrive
Former UFC welterweight title challenger Darren Till outstruck Cuban legend Yoel Romero to win the unanimous decision in the biggest BKFC event in history.
The promotion welcomed 15,894 fans inside Manchester, England’s AO Arena as a polarising main event and a handful of highlight-reel knockouts made for a memorable night.
It was a tentative fight across all five rounds as Till attempted to close the distance on Romero, however “Soldier of God” remained tactful from distance to land big overhand punches on his former UFC colleague to make it a narrow contest.
After five underwhelming rounds, though, it was Till who walked out with the victory, rather controversially, which could set up a number of potential showdowns in 2027.
The most anticipated showdown remains against Mike Perry, which fans have been clamouring to see for a very long time, and Till is determined to get that fight to take place on British soil – namely at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium.
Elsewhere, former British and Commonwealth boxing titleholder Jack Cullen blew the roof off the place as he became BKFC middleweight world champion after taking former king Dave Mundell into the overtime round in Manchester.
‘Little Lever’s Meat Clever’ stuck his jab to his American foe, utilising his height and reach differential. But Mundell remained in the contest through his phonebooth-fighting tactics that rendered the bout a draw after five rounds and into a sudden-death decider. Cullen then did enough to separate the two in the final round to become the new middleweight king and assert his dominance in the bare-knuckle world.
Karl Thompson also retained the BKFC UK Cruiserweight Title as he dominated Andy Thornton in a bloody battle across all five-rounds. Meanwhile, Gaz Corran made history as the inaugural BKFC UK Middleweight Champion as he forced a stoppage in just 26 seconds of the third round in the heated rivalry.
Corran utilised his strong combinations and heavy-hitting strikes inside the clinch to damage the eyesight of Bygraves. The latter repeatedly told his corner at the end of the second round that he was unable to see before being sent out once more, and it didn’t take long for the damage to force him out of the contest and crown Corran as king.
More of Manchester’s finest scrappers also delivered breathtaking performances as BAMMA and Cage Warriors veteran Leigh Cohoon returned to winning ways with a second-round TKO versus Ste Wallwork while local lad Ben Lowe scored a first-round stoppage over Dan McGraffin.
