Magomed Magomedov’s Father Told Him To Focus Only On Fighting, Now He Headlines In Bangkok

When Magomed Magomedov first committed to MMA, his father made a simple request. Forget about getting a job and put everything into training.

That decision has carried the 15-0 Dagestani all the way to a main event debut. Magomedov meets Brazil’s Lucas Gabriel in the lightweight MMA headliner of ONE Fight Night 49 at Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium, a U.S. primetime show that marks his first appearance in ONE Championship.

Headlining in a promotional debut is a rare honor. It reflects how highly ONE rates the undefeated contender.

Magomedov grew up in an ordinary family in Dagestan, where his father works as an electrician. He found his calling at 16 after watching the film Fight Without Rules, then studied Economics at university while building the career that earned him the title of Master of Sport.

Representing KHK Dagestan, he has never lost as a professional. The hardest moment of his life, however, came far from competition.

“The most difficult period of my life was losing my brother in 2019. It was a very painful event for me and my family,” Magomedov said.

Through that loss, his family’s support never wavered. His parents have backed his sporting career from the beginning, and his father’s early guidance shaped the path that followed.

That single-minded approach now meets its biggest test. Gabriel, a 26-year-old from Phuket Fight Club, holds an 11-1 career record and a 5-0 slate in ONE.

The Brazilian presents a significant step up from anything Magomedov has faced. Even so, the Dagestani has spent his entire adult life preparing for exactly this kind of opportunity, without distractions and without a backup plan.

His record is spotless, and his opportunity is enormous. Few newcomers are trusted to open their ONE careers at the very top of a U.S. primetime card.

He knows exactly who made that possible.

“I have never worked in another field. When I started training in MMA, my father wanted me to focus entirely on sports and training rather than get distracted by work,” Magomedov said.
