Adam Benwarwar And Khunponnoi Turn Lumpinee Into A Bangkok Battlefield

Two knockdowns would have finished most fighters. Adam Benwarwar was not most fighters.

The Moroccan absorbed everything Kongklai Sor Sommai threw at him inside Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, July 17, and still found a way to close the show in the bantamweight Muay Thai main event of ONE Friday Fights 162. The card followed The Inner Circle 22 on a stacked Bangkok fight night.

Benwarwar opened fast, rocking Kongklai with heavy punches. The Thai answered instantly, dropping the 23-year-old with a booming left hook for an eight-count.

Benwarwar rose and traded again before the round ended, opening a cut over Kongklai’s eye. Neither man showed any intention of backing down.

Kongklai pressed his advantage in round two, battering the body before dropping Benwarwar a second time with a two-punch combination. Another highlight-reel win looked inevitable.

Benwarwar had other plans. He found his range again, dropped Kongklai with a thudding right cross, then finished the job with a crushing left hook that sent the Thai back to the canvas.

Kongklai beat the count but could no longer defend himself intelligently. The referee stepped in at 2:44 of round two, handing Benwarwar a TKO victory that improved his record to 25-7.

Moments later came the story behind the story. Benwarwar revealed in his post-fight interview that he had learned of his grandfather’s passing before stepping into the ring, turning one of the biggest wins of his career into something far more personal.

The co-main event delivered its own drama. Khunponnoi Sor Sommai, 33, used relentless left kicks and clinch work to see off a game Gregor Thom over three rounds, taking a unanimous decision in the flyweight Muay Thai clash and improving to 128-34.
