Alex Pereira’s longtime coach, Plinio Cruz, is preparing for an unexpected career move after signing a three-fight deal with Misfits Boxing and securing a shot at the promotion’s heavyweight championship.
Cruz made the announcement during an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, revealing that Misfits Boxing has promised him a heavyweight title fight in September. While his opponent has not yet been confirmed, the Brazilian made it clear that he is focused solely on capturing the belt.
The current Misfits heavyweight champion is Chase DeMoor, who has held the title since defeating Andrew Tate and remains one of the promotion’s most recognizable stars. DeMoor recently called out Tommy Fury following Fury’s exhibition victory over Eddie Hall, but Cruz could now be next in line for a championship clash.
Known primarily as one of the architects behind Pereira’s rise to UFC stardom, Cruz has an extensive combat sports background of his own. The 40-year-old is a former professional heavyweight MMA fighter with an 8-9 record and won the Cage Fury FC heavyweight title in 2014. Despite spending recent years focusing on coaching, he now appears ready to test himself inside the boxing ring.

Pereira Backs His Coach’s New Venture
According to Cruz, the decision to join Misfits Boxing was heavily encouraged by Pereira and the rest of their team. Pereira publicly supported the move and confirmed that he plans to be in Cruz’s corner when he makes his boxing debut.
The announcement comes just days after Cruz cornered Pereira during his high-profile UFC White House fight against Ciryl Gane. Pereira was knocked out in the second round while attempting to become the UFC’s first three-division champion.
The setback has left Pereira facing an uncertain timeline for his return. Reports this week revealed that he received a 180-day medical suspension following the loss, potentially keeping him out of action until 2027 unless he is medically cleared earlier.
While Pereira focuses on recovery and hopes for a future rematch with Gane, Cruz is preparing for a completely different challenge. The respected coach has spent years helping create champions, but in September he will have the opportunity to become one himself when he competes for Misfits Boxing heavyweight gold.
