Can Khamzat Chimaev end UFC’s superstar drought ?

Last week at United centre in Chicago,IL Khamzat Chimaev fulfilled his prophecy of becoming UFC champion. The chechen fighter defeated Dricus Du Plessis in a 5 Round wrestling domination. Du Plessis had no answer to Chimaev pressure wrestling, who secured takedowns at ease.

UFC currently going through the superstar problem, where the top brass has no firm posterboy to advertise. The so called face of the fight game Conor McGregor’s fighting status still unclear and long time draw like Jon Jones now retired. This situation made UFC lose their two of the biggest draws.

The mma juggernaut is facing tough situation due to their recent cashcows being on skids aswell. One of the biggest stars in recent memory in Alex Pereira recently lost his throne to Magomed Ankalaev. Another former middleweight kingpin Israel Adesanya had also faced adversity in his last few fights. UFC’s another pet project ‘Sugar’ Sean O’malley failed in his recent title bids too.

However, in recent days popular fighters like Ilia Topuria, Islam Makhachev and Tom Aspinall emerging, UFC could take sigh of relief. Although, these fighters can be called stars in their own right but Chimaev is different case altogether.

Since his debut in 2020, Khamzat Chimaev took MMA world by storm. From fighting twice in just 10 days to his infamous backstage scuffle at Ufc 279, which forced an entire press conference to get canceled. Chimaev always had spotlight shining bright on him.

MMA world has always seen ‘Borz’ as a serious title contender. Being flirted with main event scene very frequently, Chimaev made a quiet impressive fanbase of his own. With Khamzat Chimaev finally claiming his throne, it has to be seen how well he’ll fair to the expectations.
