Colby Covington trashes Leon Edwards, “I think he should retire”

UFC welterweight Colby Covington had harsh words to say in regards to his rival and ex-champion Leon Edwards.

In an interview with Helen Yee Sports, the American fighter criticised the Briton, saying, “I think he should probably retire, I think he lost the hunger. I made him so much money when we fought. I just don’t think he has that hunger and the spark anymore. So I’d like to see him hang it up, and do something else.”

Things have taken a downward spiral for the former champion Leon Edwards. Edwards cemented himself as the undisputed UFC welterweight champion from 2022 to 2023, when he defeated Kamaru Usman by fifth-round knockout at UFC 278. He has now lost three on the trot, suffering defeats to Belal Muhammad, Sean Brady and most recently, Carlos Prates.

Now, Edwards finds himself down in the rankings after the latest knockout to Prates, taking a major hit of five spots to #9.

A whole different welterweight division

The welterweight division has flipped on its head in recent years with many up and coming contenders achieving wins such as Ian Garry, Carlos Prates and Michael Morales. They have now taken the spots of former title contenders such as Usman, Burns, Edwards and Covington. Covington’s retirement criticism might prove to be something for not only for Edwards to reflect on, but for his own career himself.
