Eddie Hearn Admits Benn vs Prograis Was Not His Preferred Fight for Conor Benn

Conor Benn leaves Eddie Hearn's promotion

Eddie Hearn has openly admitted that a showdown between Conor Benn and Regis Prograis was not the type of fight he originally had in mind, and the comments come at a significant moment in Benn’s career.

The revelation arrives shortly after Benn signed with Zuffa Boxing, the new promotional venture headed by Dana White. The move has already reshaped discussions around Benn’s future and the level of opposition he could face moving forward.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Hearn made it clear that while the Prograis fight carries credibility, it was not the blockbuster opportunity he was targeting.

“It’s not the type of fight that I would have put Conor in because I was looking for the big fights!!” Hearn said.

What Hearn’s Comments Mean for Benn vs Prograis

Conor Benn has been rebuilding momentum and looking to re establish himself among the elite at welterweight. With his new association under the Zuffa Boxing banner, expectations have grown that he could land major headline bouts in the near future.

Regis Prograis, a former two time world champion at super lightweight, represents a dangerous and experienced opponent. Although Prograis built his reputation at 140 pounds, his toughness, power, and championship pedigree make him far from a routine assignment.

Hearn’s remarks suggest that the fight may have come together more through opportunity than long term planning. With Benn’s recent signing under Dana White’s promotional umbrella, there is now increased intrigue over how matchmaking decisions will unfold and whether cross promotional dynamics influenced this bout.

For Benn, this is a high risk, high reward scenario. A strong performance against a proven former champion could fast track him into the marquee fights Hearn originally sought.

While it may not have been the promoter’s first choice, Benn vs Prograis now carries added significance, not just competitively, but politically, as a new chapter begins under the Zuffa Boxing era.
