MMA has constantly evolved since its inception with new weight classes and rule changes. Promotions always search for unique angles to generate buzz and attract new audiences to their events. The UFC created the BMF title to celebrate exciting fighting styles and fan favorites. Bellator introduced tournament formats to crown champions in dramatic fashion. Regional promotions experiment with different concepts to stand out in an incredibly crowded combat sports marketplace. Some ideas succeed wildly while others fade into obscurity without making lasting impacts on the sport.
A Brooklyn-based promotion just announced something the MMA world has never seen before at any level. First-ever transgender world title fight announced headlining major MMA event scheduled for June 20th in New Jersey. Critical Combat revealed plans for a championship bout between Summer Brady and Gita Figueroa for their newly created Femme World Championship. The announcement immediately sparked conversations across social media platforms about inclusion, competition, and the future of combat sports.

Critical Combat Creates Historic Championship Bout
Critical Combat originally operated under the name CSE Combat before rebranding earlier this year. The promotion launched operations in April 2025 with their inaugural event called ‘Critical Combat 1: The Reckoning.’ Since then, they’ve steadily built their brand by hosting events in the Northeast region. Their fourth event, titled Critical Combat 4: Conquer The Gauntlet, takes place in Middletown, New Jersey on June 20th.
The card features multiple fights across different weight classes like most regional MMA shows. But one particular matchup stands out from everything else on the lineup completely. Critical Combat created a brand new championship division specifically for this historic title fight. The Femme World Championship will be contested at super lightweight between two transgender athletes making their professional debuts.
“Critical Combat returns on June 20, 2026, in Middletown, New Jersey. In our historic Co-Main Event, Summer Brady and Gita Figueroa step into the Critical Combat cage, both looking to walk away as the undisputed Critical Combat Femme Champion. Contested at Super Lightweight, this bout will mark the first MMA world title fight between two trans athletes.”

Neither Summer Brady nor Gita Figueroa has competed professionally in MMA before this announcement. Both fighters will be making their pro MMA debuts on this card simultaneously. That raises obvious questions about creating a world championship for athletes without any professional experience whatsoever. Most promotions require fighters to build records before competing for titles at any level.
However, both Brady and Figueroa bring legitimate combat sports experience from amateur Muay Thai competitions. They’ve actually fought each other twice previously under different rule sets. Their rivalry provides genuine backstory beyond just the historic nature of the championship bout itself.

Brady and Figueroa Share Legitimate Rivalry
Summer Brady and Gita Figueroa competed against each other twice in amateur Muay Thai bouts during 2025. Both fights took place under the Warrior’s Cup banner, which is promoted by Three Pillars Promotions. Their first encounter happened in March 2025 at Warrior’s Cup 68 with Brady winning via TKO stoppage. That victory gave Brady momentum and bragging rights in their developing rivalry.
Figueroa wasn’t satisfied with losing their initial meeting and immediately sought a rematch. The two fighters squared off again in December 2025 at Warrior’s Cup 75 in their grudge match. This time Figueroa won convincingly via unanimous decision, evening their record at one win apiece. The competitive nature of both previous fights suggests their MMA bout should deliver genuine action.
Brady was assigned female at birth and later transitioned, while Figueroa transitioned from male to female. Both athletes have trained extensively in combat sports for years before this opportunity. Their upcoming MMA fight gives them a chance to settle the score definitively in a new combat format. The series stands at 1-1 heading into this rubber match under MMA rules.
What makes the Brady vs Figueroa matchup unique is the championship stipulation involved. No promotion has ever created a world title specifically for transgender athletes before now. Critical Combat took a bold step by establishing this division and championship opportunity. Whether other promotions follow this model remains to be seen completely. Time will tell whether this concept succeeds long-term or remains a one-time experiment in regional MMA promotion.
