Chris Eubank Jr.’s weight-cutting methods for his April 2025 bout against Conor Benn have come under scrutiny, prompting an official investigation by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC).
Weight-Cutting Methods Under Investigation
In preparation for the middleweight clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Chris Eubank Jr. employed extreme weight-cutting techniques, including the use of a sauna suit and heat suit, to meet the 160-pound limit. Despite these efforts, he missed the weight by a mere 0.05 pounds, registering at 160.05 pounds. This slight overage resulted in a substantial fine of £375,000 ($500,000) deducted from his purse.
The BBBofC prohibits certain weight-cutting practices deemed unsafe, such as the use of sauna suits. Eubank Jr.’s public sharing of his weight-cutting process, including footage of these methods, has raised concerns about potential violations of these regulations.
BBBofC chief Robert Smith acknowledged that Eubank Jr. was on track to make weight but arrived late for the official weigh-in, leaving insufficient time to shed the remaining weight safely. The investigation aims to determine whether Eubank Jr.’s methods breached BBBofC guidelines and to assess the implications for fighter safety and regulatory compliance.

Fight Outcome and Future Implications
Despite the weight controversy, Eubank Jr. proceeded with the fight, adhering to a contractual rehydration clause that limited him to 170 pounds on the morning of the bout. He weighed in at 169.4 pounds, while Benn registered at 165 pounds. Eubank Jr. secured a unanimous decision victory with scores of 116-112 across all judges.
Both fighters underwent precautionary medical evaluations post-fight and were subsequently discharged. A rematch clause exists, and discussions are underway for a potential second bout in September, possibly in Saudi Arabia.
The outcome of the BBBofC’s investigation may influence future regulations surrounding weight-cutting practices in boxing, emphasizing the importance of athlete safety and adherence to established guidelines.
