Tension is building between Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria, and it’s no longer just about what happens inside the cage. The latest exchange has added a fresh layer of controversy around a potential fight that never materialized, with both sides seemingly telling very different versions of the story.

Makhachev recently addressed the situation directly, shutting down what he called “made-up stories” coming from Topuria’s side. According to him, the fight was very close to happening, even reaching the stage where he had accepted an offer to compete at a high profile Ultimate Fighting Championship event linked to the White House. But things quickly fell apart after that.

“I’m tired of hearing made-up stories from Topuria and his team. I got the call and accepted the fight at the White House. The next day, I was told he asked for an unrealistic purse. The UFC declined, and he pulled out. That’s it nothing more to it. Even his manager confirmed it. Ilia, stop talking. Every interview you give tells a different story. You pulled out, and you know it.”

What happens next for both fighters?

Makhachev’s version is clear. He believes the fight collapsed because Topuria priced himself out, asking for a deal the UFC was not willing to agree to. From his perspective, the situation is straightforward, the offer was there, he accepted, and the other side walked away.

On the other hand, Topuria’s camp has continued to present a different narrative in interviews, which has only added to the confusion. The back and forth has turned what could have been a blockbuster matchup into a public dispute.
