Islam Makhachev Receives Russia’s Highest Sporting Honor

UFC two-division champion Islam Makhachev has added another prestigious achievement to his decorated career after being awarded the title of Honored Master of Sport of Russia, one of the country’s highest sporting honors.

The recognition comes as Makhachev continues to establish himself as one of the most accomplished mixed martial artists in the world, with success both inside the UFC and in Combat SAMBO.

Makhachev recognized for his achievements in Combat SAMBO and MMA

The award was presented in recognition of Makhachev’s outstanding accomplishments as a UFC double champion and Combat SAMBO world champion. FIAS President Vasily Shestakov praised the Dagestani star for representing Combat SAMBO on the global stage while also sitting atop the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings.

Earlier this year, Makhachev was also named a SAMBO Ambassador to the World, joining legendary heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko in promoting the martial art internationally. The appointment reflected his growing influence beyond the Octagon as one of the sport’s biggest global ambassadors.

Makhachev’s rise has been built on years of dominance in Combat SAMBO before transitioning to mixed martial arts, where he has become one of the UFC’s most complete fighters. His grappling excellence, disciplined striking, and championship success have earned widespread praise from fans and fellow fighters alike.

Receiving the title of Honored Master of Sport of Russia is another milestone in Makhachev’s remarkable career and further cements his legacy as one of the greatest athletes to emerge from Russia’s rich combat sports tradition.
