Nobody sees the early mornings. For Jonathan “The General” Haggerty, that unseen grind is the real fight, and the title defenses are simply the reward.
The British striking star defends his ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Title against former divisional king Hiroki Akimoto at ONE SAMURAI 4 on Saturday, October 17, live from Ariake Arena in Tokyo. Nearly eight years have passed since a 21-year-old Haggerty made his ONE debut in January 2019.

Since then, he has captured world titles in two sports, lost belts, won them back, and fought in opponents’ backyards around the world. The 29-year-old insists none of it came from natural talent alone.
He points instead to the partnership with his longtime coach, and to the sacrifices both men make away from the spotlight.
“Behind the scenes is the hard part. I wouldn’t say the fight night is the easy part. But, you know, the training, the strategies, the early mornings, the late nights of training [are much harder],” Haggerty said.
“Me and Christian Knowles, day in, day out, taking time away from our families and just putting in the hard work. And results like the last fight against Yoza just prove that everything’s worth it in the end. I’m also just grateful to have such a great coach by my side.”

That dominant defense against Yuki Yoza at ONE SAMURAI 1 in April marked his second successful defense of the kickboxing belt. A growing presence outside the ring, from fashion week invitations to red carpet appearances, has done nothing to dull his edge.
What drives him now is bigger than any single night. It is about the family name, and about the next Haggerty already coming through the ranks.
“What keeps me hungry is my appetite to keep on defending the belt, building a legacy, being the best in the sport, keep winning, staying on top, and keeping that Haggerty name alive,” he said.
“I’ve got my younger brother (Freddie Haggerty) coming along as well, so once it’s all said and done, then it’s his turn. But for now, I’m going to keep it going.”
