The combat sports world could witness one of the most unusual matchups in boxing history as Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are reportedly planning a fight scheduled for April 25 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to recent comments from Tyson, the bout will feature unique rules that separate it from traditional boxing contests.
No Weight Limit and an Eight-Round Format
One of the biggest talking points surrounding the potential fight is the absence of a weight limit. Tyson stated that the bout will not have any weight restrictions, which is highly unusual in professional boxing. The difference in natural size between the two fighters makes this rule particularly interesting.
Tyson, the former undisputed heavyweight champion, spent most of his career competing well above 200 pounds. Meanwhile, Mayweather built his legendary career fighting between super featherweight and light middleweight, typically weighing around 147 pounds during his prime. The lack of a weight cap could therefore create a dramatic physical contrast inside the ring.
The fight is also expected to be scheduled for eight rounds rather than the standard twelve rounds used in championship boxing. Shorter fights are often used in exhibition-style contests, helping maintain a fast pace while reducing long-term physical wear on aging fighters.
Historic Venue Linked to Ali vs Foreman
Another intriguing detail is the proposed venue. Tyson revealed that the fight could take place in the same ring associated with the historic 1974 bout between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman during the legendary Rumble in the Jungle in Kinshasa.
That fight remains one of the most iconic moments in boxing history, where Ali famously defeated Foreman via eighth-round knockout to reclaim the heavyweight championship. Hosting Tyson vs Mayweather in the same location would add a strong historical narrative to the event.
A Clash of Boxing Icons
Although both fighters are long retired from full-time professional competition, their names still carry massive global recognition.
Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history and built a reputation as one of the most feared punchers in boxing. Mayweather, on the other hand, retired with an undefeated professional record and is widely considered one of the greatest defensive boxers of all time.
The stylistic contrast between Tyson’s explosive power and Mayweather’s technical precision could make the fight fascinating, even at this stage of their careers.
