Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano Announced as the Biggest Super Fight in Women’s Combat Sports History

Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano

For years, Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano were among the biggest names in women’s combat sports worldwide. During their respective primes, intense anticipation surrounded a potential super fight between the two pioneers of modern mixed martial arts.

Despite serious discussions and public interest, the matchup never materialized due to promotional and contractual complications at the time. Recently, Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions announced that both veterans have agreed to finally compete against each other in competition.

According to reports, Rousey and Carano are scheduled to fight each other on May 16 and will fight in the featherweight category. They will headline the first-ever MMA card set to be broadcast live on Netflix, which will take place at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles.

Been waiting so long to announce this: Me and @ginacarano are gonna throw down in the biggest super fight in women’s combat sport history!  And we’re partnering with the fighter-first promotion @MostVpromotions as well as the baddest streamer on the planet @netflix! This is for all MMA fans past, present and future. More to come… much more 😉,” wrote Ronda Rousey on X.

Rousey’s last professional fight came against Amanda Nunes in 2016, marking her second consecutive loss and ultimately forcing her departure from MMA. Following that defeat, she transitioned into professional wrestling with WWE, where she built a highly successful career.

On the other hand, Carano has not competed in MMA  since 2009, stepping away from the sport during its developmental years for women. After retirement, she established a successful acting career, appearing in major films while becoming a recognizable figure in mainstream entertainment.

Ronda Rousey confirms Dana White turned down Gina Carano fight

Back in 2014, the UFC attempted to book a superfight between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano, even holding an initial meeting. At the time, Carano was focused on her growing acting career and requested six months to properly prepare for her return.

However, Dana White publicly announced the fight discussions and continued applying pressure on Carano to commit, which ultimately created tension and disagreements. As a result, the matchup collapsed and never materialized, although Rousey recently revealed she reached out to White again regarding the potential fight.

I reached out to Dana [White] and asked if he would be interested in it. It didn’t exactly work out with the UFC, but it led us to here today,” said Ronda Rousey via ESPN.

With Jake Paul backing the fight through his promotional company, the matchup gains an added layer of intrigue due to his ongoing rivalry with Dana White. Nevertheless, the hype surrounding this long-awaited showdown is massive, and it remains to be seen how much business the historic event ultimately generates.
