Shakur Stevenson Opens Door to Fight Keyshawn Davis

Shakur Stevenson has expressed his desire to spar with Keyshawn Davis in the ring. During an interview with Andre Ward, Stevenson was asked if he would take the opportunity to fight Davis. He responded:

“Based on how I’m feeling right now, I would not fight Keyshawn. That’s my brother. I wouldn’t even fight his blood brother.”

After some pressure from Ward and talk of a deal from Turkey in two and a half years, Stevenson finally agreed to the possibility of the fight, saying, “Send the offer.”

Keyshawn Davis responded on his X social account with the same words: “Send the offer.”

Shakur Stevenson last fought Josh Padley to defend his WBC World Lightweight Title and won in the ninth round. Keyshawn Davis didn’t react to this fight. Both fighters are champions in the same division, but this could be a media tactic to build hype for a possible spar.

Is this fight worth it? Yes, it makes sense for Shakur to fight Keyshawn, both for money and legacy. There’s mutual respect between the two boxers. Shakur is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters and a champion who could beat Keyshawn. For Keyshawn, the money and legacy from a win could be enough to take the fight.

Both boxers have sparred with each other multiple times for free. But there’s a big difference between sparring and a real fight. In a real fight, your pride, name, legacy, and next paycheck are on the line.

The best choice for Shakur Stevenson’s next fight is against Gervonta Davis. For Keyshawn, fighting anyone like Shakur, Gervonta, or Andy Cruz will only help build his profile.

When comparing the two boxers, Keyshawn seems to be the better. He has more power and is more versatile, with better boxing intelligence and IQ. He also has a strong offense. Shakur, on the other hand, relies on his defensive skills.

This new era of boxing is crazy. Too many egos, too many politics, and the best aren’t fighting the best across different weight classes. What’s worse, the fighters who call themselves the faces of boxing lead the way with this “duck, duck, goose” behavior. The business of boxing and legacy are two separate topics, but they’re closely connected.

Legacy often leads to big paydays in boxing. The business of boxing should come second to the sport. Boxing is an individual sport, not a team sport. Legacy is built by one fighter, though sometimes by two equal fighters, like Ali-Frazier, Ali-Foreman, Ali-Liston, and Fury-Wilder. There’s only one champion per weight division.

Stevenson vs. Keyshawn Davis is a great match. There is only one undisputed champion in each weight class. Who really wants it?
