Following the announcement of the main card for the UFC White House event, Ilia Topuria will headline against Justin Gaethje. The lightweight bout generated massive excitement among fans, yet many supporters hoped to see Topuria face pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev instead.
The Georgian-Spanish champion had been calling for a fight with Makhachev for months, believing their matchup would determine the best. However, with the Gaethje fight confirmed, the anticipated champion versus champion clash between Topuria and Makhachev was temporarily pushed aside.

Topuria later took to X, where he accused Islam Makhachev of faking a hand injury to avoid fighting him. The Dagestani star quickly responded and rejected the accusation while shifting the blame toward Topuria’s management team during the disagreement.
Makhachev claimed that Topuria’s manager demanded additional money during negotiations, which allegedly created complications and ultimately collapsed the proposed superfight. Amid the growing tension between both fighters, UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier explained that Topuria versus Makhachev remains one of the biggest fights the UFC could possibly book today.
“I think Islam vs Topuria might be the biggest and best fight the UFC can put on in any weight class, just because they’re both so elite. I don’t know if we have two better fighters in the UFC that deserve it,” said Daniel Cormier via Prince St. Pizza.

Currently, Makhachev is focused on fighting the biggest contenders in the welterweight division, including Ian Garry, Michael Morales, etc. According to his manager, the fighter might return during International Fight Week, and fans are hyped about his potential opponent.

Top lightweight contender makes fun of Ilia Topuria
Arman Tsarukyan is one of the most consistent fighters in the lightweight division and is currently on a five-fight winning streak. The Armenian have called out Ilia Topuria several times, and both share a heated rivalry. Tsarukyan claimed Topuria has been avoiding him, insisting the champion fears his relentless wrestling pressure and overall threat.
During a recent livestream, Tsarukyan mocked Topuria hilariously, comparing the lightweight champion to ducks calmly floating away across the river. “Look, it’s Ilia. You see, they’re ducking too,” said Arman Tsarukyan via Nina Dram Kick stream.

Tsarukyan is currently on a legendary media streak and has been promoting himself everywhere. He recently got into a physical altercation at the RAF 6 event, which got massive public attention.
Despite all that, UFC CEO Dana White is not that impressed with Tsarukyan and believes the fighter needs to earn his spot. It would be interesting to see whether the fighter gets the opportunity to fight for the belt against the ‘El Matador’.
