Daniel Cormier revisits being called “ghetto hillbilly” by Conor McGregor – ‘I wanted to slap him’

Daniel Cormier has opened up about one of the more personal moments of trash talk he witnessed involving Conor McGregor, admitting it crossed a line and left him furious at the time.

Cormier revisited the incident while speaking on a recent interview appearance, reflecting on McGregor’s verbal jabs during the buildup to McGregor’s fights with Dustin Poirier. While trash talk is a long-established part of fight promotion, Cormier explained that this particular exchange felt different because it targeted where he and Poirier come from.

Trash talk that hit closer than expected

“Some of the trash talk hurts,” Cormier said. “You know what was bad? Conor McGregor was fighting Dustin Poirier, and Dustin Poirier and I are both from Lafayette, Louisiana. Conor called Dustin a hillbilly.”

Cormier recalled challenging the logic behind the insult, pointing out that he shares the same roots as Poirier. His response, however, only escalated the situation.

“I said, ‘But if Dustin is a hillbilly, then I’m from the same place as him. What does that make me?’” Cormier continued. “He said, ‘You’re a ghetto hillbilly.’ I wanted to slap him.”

The former two-division UFC champion made it clear that while he understands the promotional side of McGregor’s persona, that comment struck a nerve. Cormier has often spoken with pride about his upbringing in Louisiana and the values that shaped his wrestling and fighting career.

McGregor, known for his razor-sharp and often controversial verbal attacks, has frequently blurred the line between entertainment and personal offense. While many fans view his trash talk as part of the spectacle, Cormier’s comments highlight how those words can resonate beyond the cameras and microphones.
