The UFC White House card generated massive hype when President Donald Trump first announced the historic event. Trump promised fans would witness eight or nine championship fights on June 14th. The promotion built anticipation for months leading up to the official announcement.
But when the actual lineup dropped, reactions were decidedly mixed across the MMA community. Some fans praised the main and co-main events featuring Ilia Topuria and Alex Pereira. Others, including former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad felt massively disappointed by what they considered underwhelming matchmaking for such a monumental occasion.

Belal Muhammad Paints Grim Picture Of The UFC White House Card Atmosphere
Belal Muhammad shared his honest thoughts about the upcoming White House card during his YouTube show this week. He acknowledged that people would argue about the quality of the lineup announced. But Muhammad focused more on who would actually attend the event rather than the fights themselves. The UFC restricted tickets exclusively to invited guests, VIPs, and government officials. Regular fans can’t purchase tickets or attend in person regardless of their dedication to the sport.
Muhammad referenced a specific scene from “The Hunger Games” to illustrate his expectations for the crowd. He described the moment when the protagonist Katniss participates in her tryout while wealthy Capitol citizens talk amongst themselves barely watching. They only paid attention when something dramatic happened. This is what he said:
“Obviously, people are going to hate, people are going to argue, but they’re fighting at the White House. I mean, it’s not open to the public, it’s not open to real fans. When I picture the people that are there watching, I picture, like, The Hunger Games. The first one when Katniss is at the tryout and all the rich, snobby people are at the top not paying attention to her and they’re just talking, and she had to shoot the arrow through the pig. That’s what I feel like it’s going to be.”

Muhammad continued his criticism by suggesting these attendees won’t truly appreciate the fights unfolding before them. He believes they’ll only react to blood or knockouts without understanding the nuances of MMA. That sentiment reflects frustration many hardcore fans share about the exclusive nature of this particular event.

Donald Trump’s Broken Promises Add To Disappointment
President Trump shoulders significant blame for the backlash surrounding the UFC White House lineup. He publicly stated the card would feature eight or nine championship fights during promotional appearances. That promise created enormous expectations among fans anticipating a historic spectacle. The reality delivered only two title fights, one of them being an interim title fight, leaving many feeling deceived about the event’s magnitude.
Muhammad (24-5-0 -1 NC) expressed surprise at the final card considering how much hype surrounded it for months. The lightweight unification bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje makes complete sense from a sporting perspective. Alex Pereira moving up to heavyweight to challenge Ciryl Gane for an interim title generates serious intrigue as well. But fans expected much more based on Trump’s repeated promises about multiple championships being defended.
“My thoughts initially was surprised. Definitely not the card that I thought they hyped up. You had Trump saying, ’10 title fights.’ What is there, two title fights on there?”
Rumors swirled for weeks about Islam Makhachev, Conor McGregor and Jon Jones potentially appearing on the UFC White House card. None of those materialized in the final announcement. Those absences particularly stung fans who expected the absolute biggest names in the sport. The UFC seemingly prioritized fights that made sense matchmaking-wise rather than simply stacking every available champion onto one card.
