Jonathan Di Bella Eyes ONE World Title Defense Against Wang Junguang

Most observers saw a close split decision when Wang Junguang beat Prajanchai Pongsuphan PK. The man holding the ONE Strawweight Kickboxing World Title saw something far more one-sided from his vantage point.

Jonathan Di Bella watched “The Warrior” claim that verdict in the strawweight kickboxing main event of The Inner Circle 35 on Friday, October 16, at Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium. Wang’s relentless pressure, lead-leg teeps, body shots, and knees carried him past the reigning ONE Strawweight Muay Thai World Champion in his first ONE outing in six years.

The result lifted the 31-year-old Chinese star to 31-7. Di Bella, for his part, did not think the decision should have been split at all.

“I had it 3-0 for Wang. He’s looking very strong. He looked aggressive,” Di Bella said.

Wang wasted little time making his intentions clear afterward. He wants the strawweight kickboxing gold he first chased against Sam-A Gaiyanghadao at ONE: MARK OF GREATNESS in December 2019.

The Italian-Canadian has no objection whatsoever. He sees the title shot as something Wang has genuinely earned.

“[I know] he wants the belt, so no problem. It’s his dream. He had a chance against Sam-A, but he didn’t get it. Now, he wants a second chance. He beat Prajanchai, and I guess he deserves it,” Di Bella said.

“But it doesn’t matter, man. It doesn’t matter who is in front of me. I gotta get the job done.”

The matchup would also settle a piece of unfinished business between the two strikers. The pair were booked to meet years ago, only for travel chaos to wreck the plans.

“We were supposed to fight once, like a long time ago, during COVID-19. But we had to cancel because of something with the flight, and the quarantine was too much of a mess,” he said.

If the fight finally comes together, the Montreal striker already has a prediction ready.

“I do think somebody’s going to get knocked out in this fight. And it’s not going to be me,” Di Bella said.
