Belal Muhammad has remained as confident as ever despite losing his UFC title this year.
Earlier this year, “The Bully” was defeated by former champion Jack Della Maddalena in a fight that was mostly had standing up. Muhammad tried to showcase “Canelo hands”, a claim made by him stating he had the best boxing in the division.
He ended up wearing much of the damage and bloodied by the end of the fight. Despite Muhammad’s wrestling attempts made in the fight, many fans and analysts say he should have wrestled much earlier from the beginning. After Islam Makhachev’s wrestling heavy performance at the latest UFC 322 event, it has only proven that Muhammad should have started wrestling early on.
This weekend, Muhammad will fight again on UFC Qatar’s co-main event versus Ian Machado Garry, a rangy fighter known for his kickboxing. The common consensus is again implying Muhammad’s best chance is on the ground. Yet for the second time, Muhammad has asserted his point to outbox the striker in the contest.

“Honestly, for me, I think Ian is going to try to run around this whole first round,” Muhammad stated in the MMA junkie interview. “But then by the end of the first round, his little point-jabbing is not going to work. Then I’m going to grab ahold of him, I’m going to take him down, then I’m going to let him back up, just because I’m going to show him, ‘I could take you down if I want to.’ Then I’m going to outbox him because he said he could out strike me.
“He’s a pretty striker. He’s been in there with great strikers. He’s been in there with MVP, he’s been in there with Shavkat, he’s been in there with Prates, and none of those guys finished him. So, for me, it’s finishing him on the feet and reminding everybody who I am.”
Muhammad now remains in a tough spot in the division ahead of UFC Qatar. Not only was he defeated by Della Maddelena who lost his title to Makhachev, many young contenders such as Carlos Prates and Michael Morales have emerged on the scene. Muhammad is now just one of many fighters yearning for a shot at gold.
