Former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou has made it clear that his priorities in combat sports are not about chasing a historic legacy, but about securing a better life for his family.
Ngannou, who left the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2023 following contract disputes, has frequently spoken about fighter pay and the importance of financial stability for athletes. In a recent statement, the Cameroonian powerhouse emphasized that his focus is not on building a legendary reputation inside the cage but on providing security for his loved ones.
“My legacy right now is my kids back home, with my family back home, getting healthcare, getting security, being able to put food on the table, being able to put a roof on their head,” Ngannou said.
The former champion explained that ensuring his family’s well-being outweighs the idea of being remembered as one of the greatest fighters in history. According to Ngannou, achievements and accolades in combat sports mean little compared to knowing that the people he cares about are safe and supported.
Ngannou’s comments also reflect the perspective he has carried throughout his career. Before becoming one of the most feared knockout artists in MMA, he grew up in poverty in Cameroon and later made a dangerous journey to Europe while pursuing his dream of becoming a fighter. His rise to the top of the heavyweight division eventually led him to capture the UFC title in 2021.

Since departing the promotion, Ngannou has explored opportunities outside traditional MMA structures, including high-profile boxing bouts against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Those fights brought massive paydays and global attention, reinforcing his stance that financial freedom is a critical factor in his career decisions.

Ngannou also dismissed the idea that he is chasing comparisons with legendary figures such as Muhammad Ali. While Ali’s legacy in boxing remains one of the most celebrated in sports history, Ngannou believes personal success should be measured differently.
“That’s a better legacy,” Ngannou added, referring to providing stability for his family. “You can have the Muhammad Ali legacy or whatever you want.”
For Ngannou, the definition of greatness goes beyond titles and highlight-reel knockouts. Instead, it is about transforming his success in the fight game into long-term security for the people who matter most to him.
