The IBF has officially addressed the growing discussion surrounding Oleksandr Usyk and his upcoming unsanctioned bout against kickboxing superstar Rico Verhoeven. In a fresh statement, the organization confirmed that Usyk’s IBF heavyweight title status will depend entirely on the outcome of the fight.
According to the IBF, if Usyk loses the unsanctioned contest against Verhoeven, the IBF heavyweight championship would immediately become vacant. However, if the Ukrainian wins the fight, he will still be required to defend the belt against the mandatory challenger within 180 days.
The statement has immediately created major discussion among boxing fans because of how unusual the situation is for a reigning heavyweight champion.

Why the IBF decision matters for the heavyweight division especially Oleksandr Usyk
Usyk currently remains one of the most dominant fighters in world boxing and has already cemented himself as one of the best heavyweights of his generation. Since moving up from cruiserweight, the Ukrainian star has defeated several elite names and unified multiple heavyweight titles through his technical style, movement, and ring IQ. The upcoming fight against Verhoeven, however, is very different from a traditional heavyweight title defense.
Rico Verhoeven is widely regarded as one of the greatest heavyweight kickboxers of all time and has dominated the GLORY heavyweight division for years. While Verhoeven has combat sports experience at the highest level, he is not an active professional boxer competing inside the heavyweight rankings.
That is why the bout has been labelled unsanctioned in relation to Usyk’s championship status. The IBF’s stance essentially protects the integrity of the heavyweight title picture. If Usyk were to lose outside traditional sanctioned title competition, the organization does not want uncertainty surrounding the championship.
At the same time, the IBF also made it clear that even a victory will not delay the mandatory obligations attached to the belt. Should Usyk defeat Verhoeven, he would still need to defend the title against the mandatory challenger within six months.

The decision also increases pressure surrounding the fight itself. Even though it may not officially count as a standard title defense, there are still major consequences attached to the result.
For Usyk, the matchup offers an opportunity to test himself in another high profile crossover event while still maintaining his place at the top of the heavyweight division. But it also comes with risk, especially considering the physical danger involved when facing an elite combat athlete like Verhoeven.
The heavyweight division has already been filled with uncertainty over recent years because of delays, rematches, and title negotiations. The IBF statement now adds another layer of intrigue to an already complicated championship picture.
Whether fans agree with the organization’s decision or not, one thing is now clear the stakes around Usyk vs Verhoeven have become significantly bigger.
