The boxing world is mourning the loss of former British heavyweight champion Joe Bugner, who has died at the age of 75 in a care home in Brisbane, Australia. Bugner, who famously shared the ring with the likes of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, leaves behind a legacy defined by grit, resilience, and a career that spanned more than three decades.
Born József Kreul Bugner in Hungary in 1950, his family fled the Soviet invasion of 1956 and settled in Britain. It was there that Bugner began boxing, quickly rising through the ranks thanks to his size, reach, and natural athleticism. His breakthrough came in 1971, when he defeated the much-loved Henry Cooper to become the British, Commonwealth, and European heavyweight champion. Though the decision was controversial at the time, it cemented Bugner as a major force in heavyweight boxing.

Sharing the Ring with Legends
Bugner fought in an era dominated by some of the sport’s greatest names. Over his career, he amassed 69 wins from 83 fights, including 41 by knockout, and faced three of the most iconic heavyweights in history. He fought Muhammad Ali twice, once in Las Vegas in 1973 and again in a world title fight in Kuala Lumpur in 1975. Though he lost both on points, he earned respect for going the distance against “The Greatest.” In 1973, Bugner also went the full 12 rounds with the formidable Joe Frazier, once again proving his toughness. While he never captured a world championship, Bugner’s durability and composure against the very best solidified his place among boxing’s respected contenders.

After initially retiring in the late 1970s, Bugner relocated to Australia, where he became affectionately known as “Aussie Joe.” Defying age, he made several comebacks, even capturing the Australian heavyweight title in 1995 and the WBF heavyweight crown in 1998 at the age of 48. Outside the ring, Bugner dabbled in acting—appearing in the 1994 film Street Fighter—and took part in British reality television, including I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2009.
The British Boxing Board of Control led tributes, saying: “It is with great sadness that the former British, European, Commonwealth heavyweight champion and world championship contender Joe Bugner has passed away at his care home in Brisbane, Australia. The British Boxing Board of Control passes on its condolences to Joe’s family.” Promoter Frank Warren also paid tribute, adding: “A great man who will be missed. May he rest in peace.”
Joe Bugner may never have lifted a world title, but he will always be remembered as one of Britain’s greatest heavyweights. He stood toe-to-toe with legends, fought across multiple eras, and showed the resilience of a fighter who never backed down. His story—of a Hungarian refugee who became a champion in Britain and later a national hero in Australia—is one of perseverance and reinvention. Joe Bugner’s legacy will live on as a symbol of toughness and determination in the ring.
