Jon Jones vs Daniel Cormier Grappling Match Reportedly in the Works as Legendary Rivalry Reignites

One of the greatest rivalries in mixed martial arts history could be set for another chapter, with reports claiming a grappling match between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier is officially being planned.

According to statements from the Professional Wrestling League (PWL), discussions between both sides have progressed significantly, with organizers claiming that “almost everything has been confirmed” for a potential showdown between the two former UFC champions.

If finalized, the match would mark the first time Jones and Cormier have faced each other in competition since their unforgettable UFC rivalry dominated the sport throughout the 2010s.

One of MMA’s Most Heated Rivalries

Few rivalries in combat sports have matched the intensity of Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier. Their feud began during their time atop the UFC light heavyweight division and quickly became deeply personal outside the Octagon.

The pair first met at UFC 182 in January 2015, where Jones defeated Cormier by unanimous decision to retain the UFC light heavyweight title. Their rivalry intensified over the following years, fueled by heated press conferences, verbal exchanges, and even a now-infamous physical altercation during a promotional event.

They met again at UFC 214 in 2017, with Jones initially winning by third-round knockout. However, the result was later overturned to a no contest after Jones tested positive for a banned substance, leaving the rivalry without a definitive conclusion in the eyes of many fans.

Despite never sharing the Octagon again, both men continued taking shots at each other publicly long after their fighting careers moved in different directions.

Jones eventually captured UFC titles in two weight classes, becoming heavyweight champion after years of dominance at light heavyweight. Meanwhile, Cormier established himself as a two-division champion and one of the most accomplished wrestlers ever to compete in MMA.

Now, years after their last encounter, a grappling match could provide another opportunity to settle old scores.

The prospect of seeing two of the greatest fighters of their generation compete in a pure grappling contest has already generated significant excitement among combat sports fans. While an official date has yet to be announced, the reported agreement suggests that one of MMA’s most iconic rivalries may soon be back in the spotlight.
