Khamzat Chimaev did not hold back after Conor McGregor recently referred to the UFC middleweight championship as “his belt” ahead of UFC 328.
McGregor sparked reactions online after posting that he was excited to watch “his middleweight title” defended this week. The comment quickly caught attention because McGregor has never won a UFC championship at middleweight during his career.
The former two-division UFC champion famously captured titles at featherweight and lightweight, becoming the first fighter in company history to hold belts in two divisions simultaneously. However, he never competed for or won the middleweight title.
That confusion led to a sharp response from Chimaev during UFC 328 media day.
“His belt? He lost his belt 10 years ago, so I don’t know,” Chimaev said. “This guy comes off a little bit drunk or is it proper something he’s drinking all the time? Come back to normal and work and let’s fight.”
The comments immediately spread across social media, adding even more attention to Chimaev’s ongoing tension with McGregor.

Chimaev Focused On UFC 328 Title Fight
While the McGregor exchange grabbed headlines, Chimaev’s main focus remains his upcoming middleweight title opportunity at UFC 328. The undefeated contender has rapidly become one of the UFC’s biggest stars thanks to his dominant wrestling, aggressive style, and ability to finish fights quickly.
Many fans have wondered for years whether a matchup between McGregor and Chimaev could realistically happen, largely because of the massive size difference between the two fighters. McGregor built his legacy at featherweight and lightweight, while Chimaev has competed at welterweight and middleweight during his UFC career.

Still, Chimaev clearly seems interested in the idea of eventually fighting the Irish superstar.
McGregor, meanwhile, continues to remain one of the UFC’s most talked-about figures despite long periods away from active competition. Every public comment he makes still creates headlines, especially when it involves championship discussions or potential future fights.
The latest exchange only added fuel to the speculation surrounding a possible showdown between the two, even if it currently feels unlikely from a weight-class perspective.
For now, though, Chimaev appears more interested in proving himself as the best middleweight in the world rather than debating ownership of a belt McGregor never actually held.
