The GOAT debate in UFC is undoubtedly among the most heated discussions in combat sports, consistently dividing fans and analysts worldwide. The promotion has witnessed many great names throughout its history, and this ongoing debate has kept fans passionate and constantly arguing online.
Among the most mentioned contenders in this discussion are Khabib Nurmagomedov and Jon Jones, whose legacies are frequently compared by fans. Recently, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s coach, Javier Mendez, spoke about the topic and shared his views publicly. He explained his personal reasons for placing Khabib Nurmagomedov above Jon Jones in the ongoing GOAT discussion.
“The GOAT for me is Khabib, and I would put Jon Jones in that category, but I can’t. If you’re caught doing something you shouldn’t have been doing, how can you be considered at the top of the league? This is a true sport, and in a true sport you cannot put that person ahead,” Javier Mendez via The Ahmad Mahmood Show.

Jon Jones has a controversial history with PED violations that significantly impacted his career, reputation, and championship legacy repeatedly. In 2016, Jones was removed from UFC 200 after testing positive for clomiphene and letrozole, banned substances.
Later in 2017, his UFC 214 win over Daniel Cormier became a no-contest after testing positive for turinabol. Jones was stripped of his UFC light heavyweight title multiple times due to suspensions, violations, and disciplinary issues outside of competition.

Apart from that, Jon Jones has faced several run-ins with law enforcement involving domestic violence allegations and a hit-and-run case. These incidents outside competition further damaged his public image and added controversy to an already complicated professional legacy.
In comparison, Khabib Nurmagomedov maintained a clean career, remaining unmarked both inside and outside the Octagon throughout. However, many critics questioned Dagestani’s relatively short career and his decision not to move up divisions.
Jon Jones talks about potentially ending his professional fighting career
It has been more than a year since Jon Jones announced his retirement; however, recently, he changed his mind. The veteran has expressed excitement about potentially being part of the highly anticipated White House event.
Jones was also called out by reigning light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira for a massive superfight that excited many fans. However, Jones later suggested his fighting career may already be over due to ongoing injuries and physical setbacks.
“I think I could be done. I’m young enough to compete with some of the best fighters in the world, I am healthy enough to compete with some of the best fighters in the world, but I’ve always been used to competing with the best in the world. So I don’t know, that’s a really high standard to uphold,” said Jon Jones via Helen Yee Sports.
Recently, Jon Jones confirmed he is suffering from arthritis and has qualified for hip replacement surgery. Fans are desperate to see whether this development signals the final end of Jones’ career inside combat sports competition.
