July 10th, 2021, was the last UFC lightweight Conor McGregor fought in the promotion’s famed octagon. At that time, McGregor faced Dustin Poirier in a rubber match, looking to avenge his loss to Poirier at UFC 257. However, this fight, too, did not go in the Irishman’s favor as he ended up breaking his leg towards the end of Round 1, which led to Poirier winning the fight via doctor stoppage.
Since this loss, McGregor loyalists have been waiting to see their favorite fighter return to the octagon. While he was supposed to fight Michael Chandler in 2024, that fight was canceled after McGregor pulled out due to injury. Since then, the former 2-division UFC Champion has been plagued with legal issues, and as of now, there is no clarity on when he will fight again. There are some who believe McGregor will be back in the UFC whereas others believe he will never fight again.
Popular UFC commentator Joe Rogan is someone who agrees with the people who believe McGregor will never fight again. Recently, Rogan spoke about why the former lightweight champion might never fight again. He said:
“I don’t know if Conor’s ever going to fight again. The reality is, that guy’s partying, and he’s partying real hard. A lot of fighters when they’ve sustained a significant amount of damage over the course of their career, there’s no way to not get [CTE]. We’ve all seen Conor getting beat up and knocked out. We’ve seen Conor’s sparring footage. He spars pro boxers, he’s sparring elite fighters. You’re getting hit in the head a lot… You’re not supposed to get punched in the head a thousand times a year. It’s just not supposed to happen and that’s the reality of consistent training.”
As of now, Dana White and the UFC haven’t given an update on when Conor McGregor will return to compete in the UFC octagon. The only update about McGregor’s fighting career came from the Irishman himself. On December 17th, McGregor, in a tweet, mentioned he was in talks with the Ambani family to fight Logan Paul in a boxing match in India. Since this tweet, there has been no update about this fight.
