Veteran fighter and respected boxing coach Pete Mercer is making an unexpected return to competition, having announced he’ll be stepping into an 8-man heavyweight boxing tournament with just five weeks to prepare. The event Birthday Bash 3, presented by Tank Promotions is set to take place on Saturday, 6th September 2025 in Swindon, with £2,000 prize money on the line for the winner of the Masters Heavyweight Prizefighter division.
Sharing the news via Mercer’s Gym’s official page, Pete wrote:
“Last week I was offered to replace someone in an 8 man boxing tournament. Thought sod it. Why not. I’ve got 5 weeks to get in shape. Would love as much support as possible! Who wants to come? Tickets arrive with me later today. LETS GO.”
Pete Mercer is no stranger to the fight game. Before transitioning into coaching, he built an impressive legacy in the combat sports world. His K1 kickboxing record stands at 15-0, and he remained undefeated in that discipline before hanging up his gloves in 2014. In boxing, Mercer has compiled a 2-0 professional record, and is known locally for his technical mind, sharp striking and deep dedication to the craft.
Reflecting on his journey, Mercer shared:
“I have trained across many disciplines including MMA, BJJ, Boxing and K1 Kickboxing. Some of my happiest memories have been made in a ring; some of my best friendships have been made there too. I have been training since my early teens and finally hung my gloves up from competition in 2014, remaining proudly undefeated within the K1 Kickboxing arena.”

Now, after more than a decade away from competitive action, Mercer is jumping back in to take on a new challenge. While many fighters stay retired once they hang it up, Pete is proving that passion, discipline and a lifetime of training can still push the limits — even with just five weeks’ notice.

What Is an 8-Man Boxing Tournament?
An 8-man boxing tournament is a high-stakes competition format where eight fighters compete in a single-elimination bracket over one night or a short series of matches. Each fighter must win multiple bouts to emerge as champion — usually three in total (quarterfinal, semifinal, and final). These fights are often shorter than standard bouts, such as 3 x 2-minute rounds, to allow fighters to recover and perform across the night.
This format tests a fighter’s conditioning, recovery, adaptability and mental resilience. It’s a favourite among fans due to the action-packed pacing and unpredictable outcomes. With £2,000 on the line and a stacked heavyweight field, Pete Mercer’s return promises to bring fireworks to Swindon this September.
Whether you’re a longtime fan of Mercer’s career or a new follower of grassroots boxing, Birthday Bash 3 is shaping up to be an unforgettable night
