Chris Eubank Jr could find himself back in the world title picture in dramatic fashion when he returns to the ring, with WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman suggesting the British star may compete for the super-middleweight crown. The 36-year-old has been out of action since his one-sided rematch defeat to Conor Benn last November, a fight that came after two gruelling weight cuts to 160lbs for their heated family rivalry.
Eubank Jr has since confirmed that he no longer plans to compete at middleweight, with his next outing expected to come at 168lbs. The move up in weight could open the door to major opportunities, especially with the WBC title picture shifting as champion Christian Mbili prepares for a likely defence against top-ranked Canelo Alvarez.
Mauricio Sulaiman backs Eubank Jr’s super-middleweight move
Speaking to Sky Sports, Sulaiman made it clear that Eubank Jr remains highly regarded by the organisation despite his recent setback. “Absolutely. Chris Eubank a tremendous fighter,” he said when asked about the possibility of a title fight. “I believe he sacrificed too much with the weight and he’s a natural fighter for that division. Great potential. Super fighter. He’s a world-class fighter without a doubt.”

The comments come after months of concern around Eubank Jr’s health, with the fighter dealing with the physical toll of repeated weight cuts. Promoter Ben Shalom recently revealed that the British contender is focused on returning only when fully fit, admitting that the previous year had been extremely demanding on his body.
“He’s a super-middleweight and what he did last year was very, very tough on his body,” Shalom said in a previous interview. “At his best and at his fittest, he is one of the best fighters in the whole division.”
Despite talk of a potential title opportunity, fans may need to wait before seeing Eubank Jr back in action. His team has indicated that a comeback is still several months away, with a return expected later this year rather than in the immediate future.
If the WBC follows through on Sulaiman’s praise, Eubank Jr’s comeback could be one of the most surprising title bids in recent boxing memory, marking a fresh chapter at super-middleweight after years of fluctuating between divisions.
