Floyd Mayweather Announces Matt Floyd Fight Before Ryan Garcia Showdown

Floyd Mayweather has announced another opponent for his planned ring return, confirming that he intends to face Ryan Garcia in 2027 after taking on Matt Floyd in Bangkok on December 19.

The 49-year-old boxing legend has continued to change his plans for his return to the ring, with several potential matchups discussed in recent months. His latest announcement suggests that a fight against Garcia remains on his radar, although questions remain over whether the proposed contests will take place as planned.

Mayweather, who retired from professional boxing in 2017 following his victory over Conor McGregor, has competed in exhibition bouts since walking away from the professional sport.

His latest announcement comes after a planned rematch with Manny Pacquiao was postponed indefinitely amid reported legal issues. Despite Netflix officially announcing the contest, the fight has yet to materialise.

Mayweather Calls Matt Floyd Fight a Tune-Up for Ryan Garcia

Mayweather has now announced a December 19 matchup against Matt Floyd in Bangkok, with the contest expected to be an exhibition.

Announcing the fight on Instagram, Mayweather described it as preparation for his proposed showdown with Garcia.

“This is a lil tune-up before me and Ryan Garcia lock up,” Mayweather said.

Floyd, 37, has competed in 17 professional boxing bouts since making his debut in 2021, recording 15 victories and two defeats.

He recently attracted attention on the crossover boxing scene after securing a controversial disqualification victory over Anthony Taylor at a Misfits Boxing event in June 2026.

Floyd also made his bare-knuckle debut against James DeGale in September 2025, suffering a defeat in the contest.

Meanwhile, Garcia has continued to push for a fight against Mayweather. The current welterweight world champion previously revealed that discussions had taken place about bringing the former pound-for-pound king out of retirement.

Garcia has also insisted that he intends to return to action on February 6, giving Mayweather an ultimatum over a potential contest for his WBC title. Mayweather has held the championship twice during his professional career.

However, the proposed Garcia fight is far from the only matchup linked to Mayweather.

Just last month, the boxing legend indicated that his next two fights would involve an exhibition against Mike Tyson and a professional rematch with Pacquiao. Reports have also suggested that he remains contractually obligated to face Pacquiao.

Mayweather has previously announced an exhibition against Greek kickboxer Mike Zambidis that ultimately failed to materialise.

With another opponent now announced and Garcia being lined up for 2027, Mayweather’s latest plans have created further intrigue about his future in boxing.

Whether the veteran follows through on these commitments remains to be seen, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding several of his previously announced fights.
