“Become the Triple Champ”- Michael Bisping Backs Islam Makhachev Amid Recent Controversy Over Bigger Goals
Islam Makhachev is facing widespread criticism after the pound-for-pound king reportedly refused to fight Carlos Prates in January. His withdrawal frustrated Dana White, who had to arrange an interim title match between Prates and top contender Michael Morales.
According to White, Makhachev provided no suitable explanation for his decision and is expected to return after Ramadan. This controversy prompted several experts, including Brendan Schaub, to question whether the UFC should continue having Muslim champions.
After the criticism, Makhachev made it clear that he has few fights left in his UFC career and will fight the winner of that match. “My next fight is one of the last in my career. They say Prates is too dangerous for me and Morales is too good for me. So I want to face the best of them and prove to the world once again who is the best in world,” wrote Islam Makhachev via X.
UFC veteran Michael Chandler also commented on this situation, backing Makhachev for taking his time before jumping into a fight. “Then moving up to 185 and trying to become the triple champ, I like the sound of that. And if anyone deserves it, it is Islam Makhachev,” said Michael Bisping via his YouTube
Makhachev has already won the lightweight and welterweight titles and made history with the most consecutive wins in the UFC. However, nobody has ever won three titles in the promotion, and Makhachev has the chance to do so.
Bisping also praised Makhachev for his achievements and for winning 29 fights in his career and dominating his opponents. The veteran mentioned that at the age of 35, the Dagestani will retire soon and should get the chance to fight whoever he wants, given his success.

Other fighters such as Joshua Van and Colby Covington have also shown support for Makhachev. According to Covington, Makhachev fought recently and should wait to defend his title against the winner after Ramadan.
