“Let Them Fight”- Islam Makhachev Explains Why He Didn’t Fight Carlos Prates Amid Criticism
Following UFC 333, the current UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev received an array of criticism for inactivity. The promotion recently announced the Interim Welterweight Championship as the headliner or co-main event at UFC 336.
Top contender Michael Morales will take on Carlos Prates in a much-anticipated bout; however, fans wanted to see Makhachev. During the post-fight press conference, CEO Dana White showed frustration over Makhachev not taking the fight in January.
According to White, Makhachev was offered a fight with Prates, but the pound-for-pound king decided to fight after Ramadan. Following the drama, Makhachev recently shared his perspective on why he didn’t take the fight.
“They offered me a fight with Prates, who recently lost to [Ian Garry], someone I beat. If I beat him, Morales would already be next in line, who’s not fighting and waiting for [a title shot]. Just let them fight and we will figure out who’s the real challenger,” said Islam Makhachev via pound4padel.
Prates took this opportunity to mock Makhachev, calling him a ‘coward’ for not taking the fight on three months’ notice. Makhachev was eager to reply and said he recently beat Ian Garry with ease, whom Prates beat last year.
“I just beat the guy who chased you around the Octagon for five rounds. Shut up and go train. You’re not on my level. See you soon . #maybe,” wrote Makhachev via X.

Carlos Prates and Michael Morales go back and forth
Carlos Prates is on a three-fight win streak, beating Leon Edwards, Jack Della Maddalena, and others. The fighter is known for his finishing, and fans are excited to see him in action again.
Michael Morales, on the other hand, is undefeated and is eager to get his title shot next. Following the announcement, he has issued a warning to Prates.
“You called me a coward, but you needed ten months to get ready to fight me? Bro, I don’t make excuses. I wait for my moment and take whatever opportunity comes my way. Now shut your mouth and quit smoking, because trust me, you’re gonna need those lungs,” said Michael Morales via Instagram.
Both Carlos Prates and Michael Morales have gone back and forth on social media, which has certainly increased the hype. It would be interesting to see who among these will finally get the opportunity to fight Makhachev for the title next.
