Justin Gaethje Shuts Down Ilia Topuria Rematch, Backs Arman Tsarukyan for Next UFC Lightweight Title Shot

Justin Gaethje has made his stance crystal clear regarding the UFC lightweight title picture. The former interim champion says Ilia Topuria will not be getting an immediate rematch and believes Arman Tsarukyan has earned the next opportunity to fight for the belt.

Speaking during UFC Hall of Fame festivities, Gaethje dismissed the idea of facing Topuria again after their recent clash, insisting the former featherweight champion needs to return to the win column before earning another championship opportunity.

“I don’t think he’s fighting me next. Arman deserves it way more than him. I didn’t get lucky, I beat him up. He’s gonna have to get a win before he fights for a championship,” Gaethje said.

The comments come after one of the biggest fights in the lightweight division, where Gaethje emerged victorious over Topuria. While some fans called for an immediate rematch given Topuria’s status as one of the UFC’s biggest stars, Gaethje believes there is a more deserving contender waiting in line.

Instead, the American pointed to Arman Tsarukyan, who has spent years climbing the rankings with impressive victories over elite competition. Tsarukyan was previously scheduled to challenge for the lightweight title before injury and other circumstances delayed his opportunity.

Gaethje’s remarks also suggest he has little interest in revisiting his rivalry with Topuria so soon. By stating that he “beat him up” rather than benefiting from luck, the veteran made it clear he sees the result as decisive rather than controversial.

The lightweight division remains one of the UFC’s deepest weight classes, with contenders such as Tsarukyan, Charles Oliveira, and Paddy Pimblett all looking to secure title opportunities. Gaethje’s endorsement of Tsarukyan could add further pressure on the UFC matchmakers as they determine the next championship bout.

Whether the promotion follows Gaethje’s preferred route remains to be seen, but his message was unmistakable: Arman Tsarukyan deserves the next title shot, while Ilia Topuria should earn another victory before being considered for a championship rematch.
