Petmuangsri And Gregor Thom Ready To Trade Fire In ONE Friday Fights 169 Main Event
Petmuangsri Torfunfarm has completely rebuilt his approach to competing under 4-ounce gloves, and on Friday, September 4, he puts that transformation to the test in the ONE Friday Fights 169 main event against Gregor Thom.
The flyweight Muay Thai showdown streams live in Asia primetime from Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium, with both men chasing a step closer to a US$100,000 main roster contract.
Petmuangsri enters on a two-fight winning streak, a mark that would become the longest of his ONE Championship tenure if extended.
“I’ve come to understand that ONE is completely different from traditional five-round Muay Thai. The striking output and defensive blocking are totally different, with only a little bit of five-round Muay Thai tactics being able to work,” he said.
Having watched Thom fight in person before, Petmuangsri already has a clear picture of what he is walking into.
“I was actually ringside when he knocked out Donking Yotharakmuaythai. When I saw that, I knew he was very skilled. He is a tall, aggressive, and dangerous fighter,” he said. “I plan to shut him down from the outside using kicks, head kicks, and adding knees into the mix.”
Thom, for his part, has spent his own two-fight skid identifying exactly what needs to change.
“I’ve been working on my movement, to not take the shots and give back. I realized that after my last fight against Khunponnoi Sor Sommai, where I wasn’t exiting enough, and I was just taking the shots really,” the Scotsman said.
That film study has extended to his upcoming opponent as well, and Thom believes patience will be the key to ending his slide.
“He’s a solid technical fighter. He sits on the back foot quite a lot. So I need to be a bit smarter with my shots here,” he said. “I’m not going to go 100 percent in. There’s going to be a lot of tests.”
Both men expect fireworks once the opening feeling-out period ends, and Thom made his intentions for the finish clear.
“I’m confident that I can knock him out. I just need to get him in the right spot. As long as I can keep that pressure on and back him up against the ropes, I’m 100 percent confident in my hands here.”
