Former World Champion Liam Smith Charged With GBH After Alleged Manchester Attack

Former world champion boxer Liam Smith has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent following an alleged attack on a night concierge at a luxury apartment building in Manchester.

The 38-year-old Liverpool boxer was arrested after the man reportedly suffered serious facial injuries at The Blade on Silvercroft Street in Deansgate on 13 September.

Smith appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court the following day and was charged with causing GBH with intent. He was released on bail and is due to appear at Manchester Crown Court on 19 October, where he will be asked to enter a plea.

The alleged victim reportedly suffered fractures and required surgery following the incident. Smith has been charged but has not been convicted, and the allegations have not been proven in court.

Liam Smith’s Boxing Career and Upcoming Court Appearance

Smith, known by his nickname “Beefy”, held the WBO light-middleweight world title from 2015 to 2016 and has competed against some of boxing’s biggest names.

He faced Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez during his career and also fought British rival Chris Eubank Jr twice. Smith defeated Eubank Jr in their first meeting in January 2023 before losing the rematch eight months later.

Smith had been scheduled to make his boxing comeback against Finland’s Ilari Kujala on 4 September. However, he withdrew from the bout a few days before the fight after reportedly suffering a calf injury.

The former world champion is now due back in court on 19 October at Manchester Crown Court, where the next stage of the legal proceedings will take place.
